Designing a trusted B2B platform that streamlines cross-border trade through verified business profiles, integrated financing, and secure escrow-based transactions.

Project Overview
B2Bridge is a strategic fintech platform developed in collaboration with Maybank Singapore as part of an NUS industry project. Our challenge was to explore new opportunities within the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) and propose a service that expands Maybank's role beyond traditional banking.
Rather than designing another financial product, we envisioned a trusted B2B ecosystem that enables SMEs to discover business partners, secure financing, and transact safely across borders.

Understanding the Opportunity
The establishment of the JS-SEZ creates significant opportunities for cross-border trade, yet many SMEs continue to struggle with limited capital, fragmented business networks, and a lack of credibility when working with unfamiliar partners.
Our research revealed that financing alone was not the core problem. Trust, visibility, and access to reliable business relationships were equally important barriers preventing SMEs from scaling across Singapore and Malaysia.


Designing a Trusted Business Ecosystem
Instead of separating banking from commerce, we designed B2Bridge as a unified platform where businesses can search for verified suppliers, manufacturers, and service providers while building credibility through transparent company profiles and transaction history.
The platform positions Maybank as the trusted intermediary connecting businesses beyond financial services.

Financing Built Into Business
Recognising that many SMEs lack sufficient working capital, financing is embedded directly into the purchasing journey. Businesses can access pre-approved loans during checkout, allowing them to secure inventory or equipment without leaving the platform.
By integrating lending into procurement, the purchasing experience becomes faster, more seamless, and accessible for growing businesses.

Securing Cross-Border Transactions
To reduce uncertainty when dealing with new partners, we introduced secure messaging, quotation management, and escrow-protected payments within the same workflow. Transactions are completed only after agreed conditions are fulfilled, providing confidence for both buyers and sellers.
This integrated approach strengthens trust while reducing the risks commonly associated with cross-border trade.

Reflection
This project challenged me to think beyond interface design and consider how financial services, digital products, and business strategy could work together as one ecosystem. Collaborating with Maybank pushed our team to balance user needs with commercial viability and long-term scalability.
Impact
B2Bridge reimagines how banks can support SMEs beyond providing loans. By combining trusted business discovery, embedded financing, and secure transactions into a single platform, the concept positions Maybank as a strategic partner that enables businesses to grow confidently across the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone.
